Sophie

Sophie

Our surf assistent

More about Sophie

In 2010 Sophie first came with us from Morocco to France. Morocco has many stray dogs who live a free – but dangerous – and often short life. Sophie lived with her three sisters at Mystery-Beach. Many times, we brought our leftovers from the camp kitchen to the Mystery dogs and in doing so got to know her. Some of her sisters died over time and even our Sophie got hit by a car, so that she could only walk with tree of her legs. She followed us to the Surfvilla and we fed and nursed her until her 4th leg got better. Today her duty is supporting the surf coaches in France during the summer: a job she takes very seriously. Helicopter, jet-ski, motorboat, plane – anything that dares approach the surf camp base on the beach gets driven back. After a busy day at the beach she refuels, of course, with a lot of cuddling.

More about Barbara

My name is Barbara. I’m 25 years old and study Sports Sciences while working as a Fitness-trainer and Yoga instructor in Munich. I started surfing last fall, when I came to Maranga, originally intending to stay for 1 week and eventually staying for 4 – surfing had its hooks in me. I decided to take half a year off from my studies in order to spend as much of that time as possible by the ocean. When winter rolls around and the season ends, I will return to writing my Master’s Thesis. I started actively practicing yoga three years ago and absolved my Ashtanga Vinyasa teacher training under the tutelage of Edwin and Catarina Lacayo in Nicaragua. I’m convinced that yoga has helped me with my surfing. Body tension and awareness of one’s body, balance and flexibility: all of these are trained through yoga and are an essential part of surfing. As a warm-up after waking up, as an alternative work-out on rest days, as activity on days when the waves are flat, or as relaxation after a hard day’s work – yoga always feels good and always helps. I like to incorporate functional exercises into my yoga sequences in order to strengthen the musculature and to optimally prepare the body. When I’m not on a yoga mat or on a surfboard you can find me climbing, bouldering, or going for a run along the beautiful Isar. I look forward to spending a summer by the ocean with you, chock-full of yoga and surfing!

More about Konrad

Many of you know and have come to appreciate our authentically Basque surf instructor as much as we do. During the winters, Konrad retreats into the mountains with his wife and daughter to work at a local ski resort, where he passes a lot of his time on a snowboard. Come summer he trades the snowboard for a surfboard and becomes our patient surf instructor. His calm enthusiasm and dedication to surfing is infectious and inspires everyone to work on leveling up their skills. When he’s not working in the waves he spends every free minute playing in the waves.
