My name is Barbara. I’m 25 years old and study Sports Sciences while working as a Fitness-trainer and Yoga instructor in Munich. I started surfing last fall, when I came to Maranga, originally intending to stay for 1 week and eventually staying for 4 – surfing had its hooks in me. I decided to take half a year off from my studies in order to spend as much of that time as possible by the ocean. When winter rolls around and the season ends, I will return to writing my Master’s Thesis. I started actively practicing yoga three years ago and absolved my Ashtanga Vinyasa teacher training under the tutelage of Edwin and Catarina Lacayo in Nicaragua. I’m convinced that yoga has helped me with my surfing. Body tension and awareness of one’s body, balance and flexibility: all of these are trained through yoga and are an essential part of surfing. As a warm-up after waking up, as an alternative work-out on rest days, as activity on days when the waves are flat, or as relaxation after a hard day’s work – yoga always feels good and always helps. I like to incorporate functional exercises into my yoga sequences in order to strengthen the musculature and to optimally prepare the body. When I’m not on a yoga mat or on a surfboard you can find me climbing, bouldering, or going for a run along the beautiful Isar. I look forward to spending a summer by the ocean with you, chock-full of yoga and surfing!
